As a Kubota Excavator owner, it's important to keep your machine in top working order. One of the easiest maintenance tasks you can perform is changing the fuel filter. Keep on reading to learn how to perform your own fuel filter change!

Before Changing the Fuel Filter

When it comes to changing a fuel filter on your own, it’s important to know exactly where to start! As always, your personal protection is of utmost importance. Please follow the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as described in your owner's manual.

You’ll need the following in order to successfully complete your air filter change:

Kubota Operator’s Manual
A new fuel filter that is specifically designed for your KX or U Series excavator. You can purchase that right here at Kubota Center at any of our locations!
Filter wrench that fits the fuel filter.
Fuel
Shop towels are also helpful for any possible cleanup.
Drain pan

Safety Practices to Follow:

Reminder: Fuel is a flammable product!

Mop or wipe up any spills immediately.
Keep any source of open flame away from the work area.
Dispose of fuel, used fuel filter and fuel soaked rags according to local regulations.

To Remove & Replace the Fuel Filter:

Park the excavator on a level surface and stop the engine.
Open the water drain on the bottom of the fuel filter and let it drain some of the fuel out to prevent spillage when removing the old filter.
Locate and shut the fuel filter shut off.
Locate the filter and remove it with the fuel filter wrench.
Safely discard the filter and wipe the exposed surfaces of the filter mount.
Apply a light film of fuel to the mating surface of the new filter.
Turn it in tightly by hand.
Wipe and clean any areas that may have spilled fuel on them.
Reopen the fuel filter shut off.

Purging the System of Air:

Must be done after every fuel filter change.

Be sure the fuel tank is full of the correct fuel.
Turn the ignition to the “run” position.
The air from the fuel system will automatically be purged in one minute.
When starting the excavator, if it starts and then stalls, the purge was insufficient. Repeat the process to purge the system again.
